Scripture Union Daily Guide 30th July 2024 Outline:

The Israelites could make vows to dedicate themselves, their slaves, a family member, an animal, or a piece of property to the service of God (cf: 1 Samuel 1:11). But they could “redeem” or “buy back” such gift and still fulfil the vow by giving money as substitute. Note that the amount assigned to each age bracket and sex has nothing to do with their worth before God (vs.3-8).

Every person is valuable to God. The amount assigned was based on how much work each person would have been able to do. A “shekel” was the equivalent of a month’s wages for a worker. This was a guide to help them think properly before making these special vows. How do you think v.13 may also help to curtail rash vows?

As a Christian, we should be cautious in making vows and be ready to keep our promises, especially to the Lord. We should avoid emotional and rash decisions when we hear missions’ challenges and appeals to support God’s work. We cannot fail to fulfil our vows to the Lord! It is His covenant with us (see Ecclesiastes 5:1-2; Proverbs 20:25).

Practice/Word Application
So what? Failure to keep promises has led to many broken marriages, and underdevelopment in our communities.
